Chapter 12 - Amber

She might have been back in her bedroom for only a couple of minutes or maybe even a few hours, but all Amber knew was that she was in agony. Her chest was so tight and painful that she could barely breathe, and her tears had fallen so long and hard that her eyes had long since dried up, leaving nothing but gut-wrenching sobs behind as she paced up and down the room, trying to think of something, anything she could do to bring Miles back from the brink of death.

When she closed her eyes, all she could see was him lying there in that pristine white infirmary bed, burned and bleeding and barely breathing, looking as if he were as good as dead. Just standing there with him, she had been able to feel his life slipping away from him, almost as if her own was going with him.

Dropping to her knees in her bedroom, she screamed, clasping her hands to her head and feeling as though her skull was trying to rip itself apart. Her heart had been torn into a million pieces and she could feel it bleeding into her chest, wishing she could reach into her ribcage and rip it out just so that she wouldn't feel it anymore.

The longer she remained in her room, the more painful it was to try and ignore the voice in the back of her mind that continued to say, You have to go to him. It clawed at her insides and made her wolf whimper and howl with pain until she could take it no more. Still feeling sick to her stomach and drained from crying, she pushed herself to her feet and walked awkwardly on shaking legs back to the infirmary.

When she arrived, she paused at the door to Miles' room and sucked in a deep breath to try and steady herself. All was quiet, with most of the Silverdale wolves either out on extra patrolling or resting while they still had the chance to do so, not to mention the fact it was the middle of the night. With her werewolf sense of the moon, she would have guessed it was somewhere around four in the morning, and she was slightly relieved. It was quiet so there were few people around to see her in such a state, but they had almost made it through to the next morning without news of Miles' death. That had to count for something, right?

Closing her eyes, Amber listened through the door. Though nobody was speaking, she could hear the breathing of three individuals, one slow and grunting as if they were asleep, one calm and focused, and another ragged and shallow as if every breath was a struggle. He is still hanging on, she thought hopefully even though just the sound of his pain-filled breathing made her feel like she wanted to turn and run all over again. I can't leave him. Not again.

And so she gripped hold of the door handle and gently pushed it open.
